Jack Hodgson (FN 37-40).

David Johnston (FN 41-44) has kindly provided the following notice:

“Jack died in February 2014. He started at St Bees School on Foundation in 1937 and was an athletic, strong, tall boy, soon winning the Junior Steeplechase. He enjoyed rugby as a lock forward and played for the school and, later in life, both Carlisle and Cumberland. On leaving St Bees he volunteered to serve in the Royal Engineers and saw action in North Africa and Italy during the war. Afterwards Jack studied civil engineering at Durham University, then qualified to join John Laing and Son Ltd, working in London and also Scotland on major hydro-electric schemes.

Jack married Pat, who was a teacher, and subsequently they had four children, David, Ann, Jane and Adam. David, the eldest, went to St Bees School (FN 69-74) and then to Edinburgh University from where he graduated as a Geomorphologist. He was working in West Africa in 1983 when he was struck by lightning and died instantly. This was a great loss to his father and the family. Pat died in 2003. Jack returned to the family home at Burgh by Sands, Carlisle and joined Border Engineering Contractors as a Director until he retired.
One of his great enjoyments in life was playing golf and he was a member of both Carlisle and Silloth golf clubs as well as the OSBs Golfing Society. He played in the Halford Hewitt, Cyril Gray and the Critchley Cup. Jack will be sadly missed.”
